This painting
illustrates a famous fishing vessel used in ports all over
the world. The "dory" has been traced as far back
as 300 A.D. when they were used as surf boats in the Arabian
Sea. Generations of seafarers have taken them nested aboard
their large schooners on the Grand Banks. Its stackable,
high-sided, stable design can withstand rough and windy
weather. They are not only seaworthy but can carry a large
load, becoming extremely steady without being sluggish.
They continue to be in demand as lifeboats on draggers and
long liners far and wide. Many want them as yacht tenders.
In Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, dory races are a favourite annual
event.
